The smart Sicilian resort of Taormina has long been favoured by artistic Brits in search of the more exotic. A byword for sin in Edwardian times, the town nestling in the shadow of smouldering Mount Etna with views over the sea has attracted visits from Oscar Wilde, D.H. Lawrence, Salvador Dali and Truman Capote.
