As the husband of a long-suffering sub-postmistress, I feel I have to comment on the post office closures programme Sub-post offices are run on a franchise-style basis. Sub-postmasters provide the premises and the Post Office provides the systems. It also provides a core salary based upon the number of people to serve, the number of counters required and a fee for each transaction. The local sub-postmaster then employs and trains staff.
The rent of premises, rates and upkeep fall on the sub- postmaster. To cover these costs, many small post offices have shops attached, such as newsagents. Together, they provide really useful and sometimes essential services to local communities.See the full content of this document
