As I write, snow is falling across a large swathe of the Alps and temperatures have dipped to their lowest levels this winter, making it possible for those areas with artificial-snowmaking machines to lay down even more of a base which should promise excellent skiing to come.

At best, however, this winter in Europe could be described only as patchy, with pockets of good snow in some places, mostly at resorts at high altitudes, meaning that you literally have had to be in the right place at the right time to fully enjoy your ski holiday.
