THE bosses of Network Rail have been accused of paying millions of pounds of taxpayers' money in compensation to staff, including payments for allegations of race and sex discrimination by one of the firm's senior executives.

Up to 100 staff of the publicly funded firm that owns Britain's rail system are said to have received pay-offs after signing confidentiality clauses that prevent them from speaking publicly about why they have left the company.

Dozens are said to have received six-figure sums and three senior employees are thought to have been paid between Pounds 450,000 and Pounds 850,000.

Yesterday, the company hired the Pounds 450-an-hour showbusiness law firm Schillings in an abortive attempt to gag The Mail on Sunday.

They made a 2am threat of injunction but abandoned it after being told that the matter was clearly in the public interest and had been raised in Parliament.
