Aggie and I have come a long way in a short time. Since our first series was screened on Channel 4 in 2003, our salaries have soared, our books have become bestsellers and we get well rewarded for appearing in advertisement campaigns in Britain and America.

With the money that I've earned, I've been able to buy a pretty house in Surrey and a nice car. My beloved second husband, Peter, and I can afford to go on fantastic holidays. After a lifetime of having to count the pennies, it seems incredible that my life could turn around so quickly.

No one has the right to say they are due a bit of good luck, but I can't help feeling someone saw fit to smile on me at last.What millions of people who see me on television can't possibly know is that I have had a very hard time.
