M. I. writes: I have a dispute with the Student Loans Company. As I still do not earn enough to be able to start repaying my loan, I sent it an application for deferment, letting them know my earnings situation. It appears to have lost this, and though I sent copies of the original documents, it is now demanding Pounds 260 in late deferment penalties. This is not a repayment of the loan itself, but simply its charges. I do not believe a High Street bank would be allowed to penalise customers so severely, let alone a non-profit organisation.
BANKS do impose penalties that appear out of all proportion to the sums involved. For example, a charge of about Pounds 35 is not unusual if you are overdrawn by just Pounds 1 without permission.See the full content of this document
