We're told career juggling is something we'll all have to get used to, like it or not. Susie Cole likes it a lot. Last year, she opened an interiors shop in Lyme Regis, Dorset, while continuing to work as a part-time nurse. Taking on the shop was a moment to shed her last vestige of regret for missing out on art school.

'Attending art school was considered a bit risquE in the 1960s,' she laughs. 'Good girls went into nursing, teaching or something secretarial, so I became a nurse.' And it's a job she loves, but it doesn't stanch the creative flow. When her children, Sarah, James and Gemma, were growing up, Susie also ran an interior design business from home, spurred on by friends who wanted their houses made as beautiful as hers.
