SIR STEVE REDGRAVE shakes his head as he talks about the terrible injuries suffered by the man who helped him make Olympic history. redgrave is at pains to remain calm, but the horror of the accident that left fellow Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell facing a six- month battle to recover from head and brain injuries caused when he was hit by a passing truck while filming in the United States cannot hide the emotion in his words.

'I want him to get back to the James i know and love,' said redgrave last week. 'From what i understand it'll be six months at least, and could be longer. What saved James was his incredible fitness. Without it he could quite easily have been left dead on the road.' Cracknell, 38 and a renowned adventurer, suffered his injuries taking part in a 16-day endurance race to cycle, run and row 3,000 miles from Los angeles to New York. He was cycling through arizona and being filmed by the discovery Channel when the wing mirror of the truck struck his head from behind as it passed him on the morning of July 20.
