Summary

Oh God, oh God, oh God. Susan has gone missing. I saw her on Friday night, when she shot into the house as a police helicopter buzzed the garden (I live in Hackney, East London). I didn't see her all day Saturday, but then, in the middle of the night, she woke me up to ask for her prawns.

I then left to go to the Cannes film festival early the next morning (as you do), and when I got back on Monday, my husband hadn't seen her at all. We spent the evening calling her name, but nothing. Normally, I will go into the garden, call 'Susie!', and you will hear this little cry and rustling of undergrowth and then a crash as she lands on the fence. She will then drop, as softly as if by parachute, into the middle of the lawn, then motor round it in excitement before stopping for a head rub. She likes to eat only under the spare bed upstairs, so she will then tiptoe after me into the house. She was a feral cat when we adopted her, and so has always been painfully shy; the husband is under strict instructions never to sneeze. If anyone comes to the house, she scoots up the chimney. In summer, she loves to be outside, and is always climbing trees and basking in flower pots. But she has never gone far before.
