When I was a girl, Prince Charles emerging from the Australian surf was the Daniel Craig of his day. He may now be 60, and have traded in the Aston Martin for a bus pass, but I still wouldn't crawl over him to get to John Sergeant. The action man of my youth has survived the slings and arrows of the media to emerge distinguished, respected and with all his own teeth.

A cat may look at a future king though, and for years I did - from the other side of a police cordon. Then in 1987, my cousin, who was Mayor of Tower Hamlets, asked me to accompany him to the opening of the London City Airport by the Prince of Wales. This was my opportunity.
