LIVE FOR STYLE Celebrated shirtmaker Ben Sherman (above) was born Arthur Benjamin Sugarman in 1925, the son of a Brighton giftshop owner.

Seeing little future in sticks of rock, he moved to America and changed his name to Ben Sherman either because he felt it sounded more American or to hide his Jewish identity. After two failed marriages, he met his third wife, Ruth. Her father owned a shirt company, and Sherman was put in charge of it.
