STREAMERS whizzing from the decks, excited passengers clinking brimming champagne glasses, friends and family on the dock waving while a brass band played. This was the exuberant atmosphere of the typical 'sail away' when Douglas Ward wrote his first Berlitz guide to cruising 25 years ago.

But, with his silver-anniversary edition about to come out, he says: 'Nowadays you are more likely to be hassled by waiters to buy a "bon voyage" cocktail in a plastic cup, and streamers are banned everywhere but Japan by environmental protection laws.'
