Summary

It's not often you see a man leap onto the back of a crocodile and wrestle it, Tarzan style, into submission. But Steve Leonard -- vet, adventurer and self-confessed adrenaline junkie -- is no ordinary vet. His tussle with a croc twice his size makes for chilling television.

Incredibly, Steve smiles at the memory now. 'Seeing those teeth flashing under my nose was a bit alarming. But then I remembered the vets' rule that the closer you are, the less likely you are to get hurt. I hung onto the croc's neck in a tight hug, because if I'd held it at hand's length, it could have had my arm off.' The story of how Steve, 38, came to be grappling with a crocodile is revealed in his extraordinary new series Animal Kingdom, which follows the fortunes of the 175,000-acre Erindi Game Park in Namibia. Steve -- whose TV career began when he was chosen to be filmed for the BBC documentary Vet School in 1996 -- spent a month living among the animals and staff at the reserve. But the TV cameras nearly filmed his own epitaph when things went very wrong with the crocodiles.
