SMALLER than a fingernail, it was the single piece of evidence that contributed more than any other to convince the world that Libya had been behind the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 on the night of December 21, 1988.

The tiny fragment of a timer device made by the Swiss firm Mebo was allegedly found in the singed collar lining of a ski shirt 25 miles from the crash site, propelled out of the aircraft in the explosion that tore it apart and left debris strewn across the Borders.
