It was a bizarre start to a strange encounter. I had had to run full pelt through the streets of Sofia to make a clandestine meeting that was to give me a unique insight into the anger Charles feels about the way Britain has treated him.

The meeting had taken months to arrange. I had wanted to interview the Prince for Panorama on the

occasion of his 50th birthday in November 1998.

Charles and his advisers had blown hot and cold. Four years earlier, his aides had persuaded him to drop his reserve, to pour out the agony of his personal life to Jonathan Dimbleby.
