Shout It From the Roof Tops ; Resolutely Unglamorous, but Essential for the Man On the Move... Especially at Christmas (Well You've Got to Have Somewhere to Put the Kids)

Summary

Carrying luggage on the roof used to be a somewhat haphazard affair. You'd bolt a couple of crude-looking bars on to your car (probably chipping the paintwork in the process) then strap on the suitcases with a couple of bungee cords - and hope it didn't rain.

These days, there are more sophisticated solutions. Bars bolt either on to rails (as pictured here) or into channels that run down either side of the roof; some are aerodynamically designed to reduce drag and can be attached single-handedly. On top you can, with the right attachment, secure anything from bicycles and kayaks to, as featured here, roof boxes. These come in various shapes and sizes and are lockable so you can stop for lunch without worrying that your precious cargo might be pinched.
