Two years ago I had osteoporosis. And now I haven't, at least for the short term. Last July, a bone scan showed that my bone density has improved enough in four years of treatment for my consultant to take me off a bisphosonate drug. I was ecstatic.

Alarmingly, a report published online only days before by the British Medical Journal showed that taking these drugs can double the risk of cancer of the oesophagus. But what's a patient to do? Risk fractures, or cancer?
