THEY have been the must-have in the garden this year - potato growing kits. The square bags, which promise a rich harvest of fresh potatoes, are everywhere.

The idea behind them is straightforward: you add six inches of compost and plant your seed potato. Then, as the plants grow, you cover them with compost until they fill the bag, the foliage dies off and the bounty is unearthed.

Unearthed! The Winners [Scot Region]

But is it really as simple as that? To find out, we launched the Great Mail on Sunday Potato Challenge. We recruited seven personalities who spend their lives governing, informing and entertaining the nation to see who could grow the best crop.

We equipped each with a kit of growsack, compost and five Vales Emerald seed potatoes, and gave them ten weeks to deliver the goods.
