Summary

CRAIG BROWN Frances Wilson has written a brilliantly detailed study of public disgrace in How To Survive The Titanic Or The Sinking Of J Bruce Ismay (Bloomsbury, EUR 17.99). Her antihero, Ismay, was the chairman of White Star Line, which ran the Titanic. After leaping to safety in the disaster, he spent the rest of his life cowering under his reputation as the coward whose competitiveness had caused the Titanic disaster, and who had then elbowed his way into a lifeboat with no thought for others. He emerges as a cold fish, insensitive and self-pitying, but was he really beyond the pale? 'Ismay is the figure we all fear we might be. He is one of us,' says Wilson.
