My cousin Hamish thinks no man is good enough for his favourite small-screen queen, Fern Britton. Well, have I got news for Hamish. At close quarters in the back of a cab, Fern's television chef husband Phil Vickery looks very good indeed, with his warm brown eyes and the ready-for-anything, rolled-up sleeves that got him dubbed 'the osteopath' by Fern.

No wonder she was smitten when she met Phil on BBC1's Ready, Steady, Cook in 1994. His culinary arts clearly knew the way to a woman's heart, and the couple married in 2000, with their on-screen partnership continuing when, in 2006, he became resident chef on Fern's ITV1 show This Morning. Although his recent Aldi supermarket ads have made him even more recognisable, he grins: 'I know my place. I've even been called Mr Fern Britton.' So how does this Michelin-starred maestro, whose pre-TV career saw him cooking for Liam Gallagher, David Bowie and Margaret Thatcher at Taunton's ritzy Castle Hotel, cope with all the glamorous temptations in broadcasting? 'I'm too old for that sort of thing - and I've met the girl of my dreams already,' smiles Phil, who is looking forward to more downtime with Fern since she announced she was leaving This Morning after a decade of getting up at 5am. 'She just wants a rest at the moment, although lots of offers have come in,' he reveals, adding that Fern 'might do some acting' like her brother, the actor Jasper Britton.
