As you watch fellow drivers, it's hard to believe that since 2003 it's been an offence even to touch your phone while driving, and from Tuesday the penalty for doing so rises to Pounds 60, plus the usual three penalty points. The easy, legal solution for drivers wanting to make or receive calls is a wireless, hands-free headset with voice-controlled dialling, such as the ones on these pages.

The technology behind such devices is Bluetooth, the short-range radio system that provides secure communication over a ten-metre range between headsets and 'paired' mobiles. Most new mobiles support Bluetooth, although you should check compatibility with your phone before buying a headset, and the pairing process is usually a simple affair, taking just a few seconds to set up.
