IT MUST have seemed like a good idea at the time putting Saddam Hussein on trial. But any more performances like last week will soon have them bringing what was intended to be an extended run to a premature close.

Sharp-eyed readers will have noticed the elephant that's not sitting in the corner of the court. Saddam's 1980 invasion of Iran his biggest crime of all has somehow failed to make it into the indictment. This was an unprovoked attack on his sovereign neighbour just like the one on Kuwait, which does form one of the charges.
