Daniel Defoe recorded the great storm of November 1703 and its aftermath in his book The Storm.
England was at war with Spain and hundreds of vessels were sheltering in the Channel. Defoe collated many first-hand accounts and it became clear from these that the disaster followed a period of gales from earlier deep depressions sweeping across the South from the Atlantic.See the full content of this document
