I am sitting in my living room watching Prime Time. Elaine Byrne is assuring the nation that all is not lost. This is a prime opportunity, she says, for us all to reinvent ourselves. I can't hear her. A clatter of hail stones has just landed on the roof. This is followed by a flash of blue lighting. Diarmaid Ferriter interjects. It would be lovely if we could reinvent ourselves, he says, but the problem is there isn't anyone talented enough to do it. He is wearing a fleece with a large collar. He looks as if he has just milked a herd of cows.

'Really,' I say to my boyfriend. 'How did they let him on dressed like that?' My boyfriend grunts. An American woman I don't recognise suggests that reinvention is possible if we just take a few practical steps. Eamon Dunphy sucks in his cheeks. 'I can't watch this any more,' says my boyfriend. He turns off the television. There is darkness, until the next lighting bolt.
