Acertain amount of bravery is needed to change career in your mid- forties, especially when it involves a 50 per cent cut in salary and the new job is with an organisation up to its neck in debt. But that is what Philip Williamson, boss of Nationwide, the country's biggest building society, did 15 years ago when he quit as a director at property company UK Land to join the then struggling mutual as a lowly area director.

Despite a difficult start at Nationwide Anglia, as it was then, he has never regretted his decision not surprising as Williamson is the highest-paid chief executive in building society history, presiding over a Pounds 120 billion business that is growing at a rapid rate and has 16,000 staff.
