Summary
THE third anniversary of the economic crisis looms on August 9, bringing with it a raft of commentary along the lines of: 'How did we fail to spot this one coming?' With all due modesty, some of us would prefer to be excluded from this particular 'we'. Indeed, it may be more fruitful to recall what it was that enabled a minority of observers three years ago and more to predict trouble and to refuse to believe: 'This time, it's different.' One aspect of this immunity to wishful thinking was the firm conviction that the economic problems of the past have an unpleasant habit of returning to haunt us when we least expect it. Only constant, patient and unglamorous attention to such problems will keep them at bay.
