ZARA PHILLIPS is on the verge of retaining her European eventing title and guiding Britain to a seventh successive team gold today after a stunning cross-country run here in Italy.

After she got off Toytown the 26-year-old was hugged by her mother, the Princess Royal, while the other members of her family all dressed in British team polo shirts flocked around her. They included her father, Mark Phillips, who has been present throughout the competition, and her stepmother, Sandy.
